The recent grant of 11 licenses for the operation of mobile money payment services by the Central Bank of Nigeria (“CBN”) to several companies in Nigeria heralds the commencement of a proposed “cashless” economy in Nigeria. Monitise MM Nigeria Limited a licensee under the CBN scheme seeks to facilitate e-commerce and cashless transactions by providing mobile money payment solutions to individuals, financial institutions and other corporate bodies across the country.
